As one of the largest hospitals in Victoria, the Royal Melbourne Hospital provides a comprehensive range of health services across two campuses. Their city campus provides general and specialist medical and surgical acute services. Sub-acute services, including rehabilitation and aged care, outpatient, and community programs are provided from their Royal Park campus.
The Royal Melbourne Hospital plays a key role within the broader Victorian health sector as a major Victorian referral service for specialist and complex care and being a designated state-wide provider for services including trauma.
During the peak of the COVID 19 pandemic, The Royal Melbourne Hospital had a responsibility to put extensive safety procedures in place to assess and manage any patients with viral infections, to ensure the safety of patients and staff members at all times. During this time, their Emergency Department was often overwhelmed with people requiring COVID 19 testing. This situation was exacerbated by the need to take a temperature reading of all persons prior to entering the Hospital.
T-Scan’s automated temperature measurement system was used to as a triage mechanism to rapidly process the high volume of temperature scans required for entry. The system was easy to set up and use, made the screening process more efficient and allowed nursing teams to better prioritise intake tasks and reduce waiting times for COVID testing.
The solution has proven to be extremely successful and reliable and the Hospital has now installed seven scanning units at all main entries. RMH intends to continue to use the technology post-COVID 19 as a new protocol for Hospital entry.
